The future of dairying in Ireland is bright. There were many times over the last 12 months when the sanity of the person writing that sentence would have been questioned. The fact that both weather and milk price have improved considerably since autumn doesn’t make that sentence any truer. The fact is, the world is short of fat and protein and increasingly so. Whoever can supply that growing market has a bright future. The long-term fundamentals are strong, with growing demand for dairy in Africa and Asia and a reduction or stagnation in supply across the EU, New Zealand and Australia. The United States is the only western economy that has the ambition and capability to increase milk output and with Donald Trump steering the ship, who would bet against them doing just that.
