Tullamore – the show that just keeps on giving. Over 60,000 people passed through the gates of the Butterfield estate last Sunday in what proved to be an exceptional day for all.
With a massive prize fund of €175,000 up for grabs by exhibitors, it’s easy to see why entries have flooded in since early June.
A large part of this fund was made up of prize money towards the AIB National Livestock Show.
This show is the largest of its kind in Ireland and attracts the best of the best animals across all breeds.
Spectators throughout the day commented on the quality of the stock on show, with a number of overseas judges saying that the top end would stand up anywhere in the world.
Listen to an interview with show secretary Freda Kinnarney in our podcast below:
While the show may have come to a halt for exhibitors and spectators for another 12 months, next week sees organisers start the planning for 2018.
Throughout this week’s pedigree section, we look at many of the goings-on in the cattle rings on the day.
Click here to see the gold medal recipients. These medals are highly sought-after in the showing world, with some people spending a lifetime trying to breed an animal good enough to receive one.
Four national breed finals took place at the show. This week, we cover the Charolais and the Limousin – the Simmental and Hereford finals will be covered next week.
Finally, we look at the Salers all-Ireland calf finals which were held at Tullamore for the first time. The Angus breed also hosted a calf final, which will also be covered next week.
