Johnny O'Brien, the current secretary of Barryroe IFA branch, has been nominated to contest the Munster regional chair election.
O'Brien was nominated at a meeting of the IFA Cork central executive on Monday night.
O'Brien previously served as president of the Grassland Association.
Speaking at the Cork central executive, O'Brien said: "I am ready for a challenge and I will give it my best shot."
He recently retired as chair of Barryroe Co-op, one of the four west Cork co-ops which owns and supplies Carbery Milk Products' cheese plant. He had chaired the Carbery board for two years and was also on the board of Ornua.
One of the reasons why he was encouraged to enter the race is his education and experience in corporate governance from UCC and the Ryan Academy in DCU while involved with ICOS and Carbery.
O'Brien's dairy herd has grown to 200 cows and also keeps a small pedigree Hereford breeding enterprise.
