Update Success !
Earlier this year, Ornua Foods North America filed a lawsuit against Old World Creamery for using the name ‘‘Irishgold’’ as its new brand name for locally produced butter.
Now, following a court ruling, Old World Creamery must change its trademark from ‘‘Irishgold’’ to ‘‘Eurogold’’.
A statement from Ornua to the Irish Farmers Journal said: “We appreciate the court’s time and attention to this matter.”
The Kerrygold brand is one of the Irish dairy industry’s most important assets and Ornua has a responsibility to its members and stakeholders to take steps necessary to protect its trademarks
“We believe that this judgment strengthens our ability to provide such protection.”
Kerrygold taken off Wisconsin shelves
Earlier this year, Kerrygold butter was removed from all shops in Wisconsin because of a law that requires that state regulators approve the food safety of butter made outside the US.
Kerrygold has been selling its butter in the US for over 15 years before local protectionist pressure led to the enforcement of this old law in Wisconsin.
As Kerrygold is graded, packaged and produced in Ireland, retailers are banned from selling the butter in the state.
