Inspector Eddie Golden told the Irish Farmers Journal the work will then begin to ascertain where each item came from and if it was stolen.
They will record serial numbers identification marks and search the Garda Pulse system, as well as liaising with more than 40 police forces in the UK. It is believed that some of the property discovered may have been stolen there.
Where owners cannot be identified, gardaí may decide, in time, to invite the public to identify items, through an open day or an online catalogue.
Inspector Golden urged farmers and the public to always report any suspicious activity in their local area.
“This case highlights two main points,” he said. “Firstly, that people should always mark their property so that it can be identified. And secondly, that you should always report suspicious activity to the local gardaí. If you see something unusual, whether that’s the movement of a van or machinery, report it. This will help us in our effort to combat criminal activity.”
With an estimated value of €200,000 on the shed contents, Inspector Golden described the discovery as “a case of good old detective work”.
