The field of nominees for the position of Connacht regional chair is getting even more crowded with last night's nomination by Sligo of its former county chairman Eddie Davitt.
Davitt did not put himself forward for the position but near the end of the meeting his name was proposed by members and he accepted the nomination. Davitt is a hill sheep farmer and a former Sligo county chairman. He currently represents Sligo on the IFA Rural Development Committtee. Current county chairman JP Cowley said there is "no better man" for the job.
Davitt's nomination means there are now four nominees in the race to become Connacht regional chair. Galway nominated incumbent regional chair Tom Turley, Mayo nominated Padraic Joyce and Roscommon nominated John O'Beirne. All nominees need the backing of their own county plus the backing of one other county in the region in order to become a candidate in the race.
The current scenario gives Leitrim, the only county in Connacht yet to nominate someone, the deciding vote. Leitrim will hold its county executive meeting tonight (Wednesday).
Completed nomination and acceptance forms for the position of regional chair must be received no later than 5.30pm on Wednesday 3 February 2016.
