Bred by the Wall family, Newcastle, Co Dublin, Auroch Hillary ET, went on to set an Irish record price for a Simmental when sold for €26,000 to the Wood family, which runs the well-known Popes Simmental herd in Lancashire, England.
This January-born Hillcrest Champion daughter out of Raceview Misty-Jade had two bidders locked in before eventually smashing the previous male and female top prices.
The female record went back to before the euro was introduced when John Stone of the Milton herd achieved £20,000 for his heifer, while the male record of €20,000 is held by the Wall family for Curaheen Tyson, sold in 2006. Hillary’s full brother Auroch Ace sold for the Tullamore society sale record price of €11,000, her half-brother Curaheen Whiskey sold for €17,000 and her half-sister bred Curaheen Bossman, now in Progressive Genetics.
While great for the breed as a whole when the hammer finally fell at €26,000, it can be said that the result was met with emotion as well as delight given the passing of David Wall earlier in the year.
Roundhill Egiroflee 1164 ET - Limousin
Sold for €19,500 at the Genetic Advantage Limousin sale
Bred by Tim and Doreen Corridan, Fedamore, Co Limerick, this seven-year-old daughter of Mas Du Clo sold with her young Roundhill Hamlet daughter at foot.
Egiroflee was junior champion at Tullamore show 2011 and won the national senior cow class at Tullamore 2015.
Backed with proven breeding, her grand-dam Giroflee was imported from France and is the dam of well-known AI bull Nenuphar. Egiroflee’s full sister made €8,000 at the sale back in 2012. Her daughter Roundhill Giroflee 1532 sold the same day for the second top price of €16,000.
Sold for €13,000 at the Charolais Christmas Cracker
Judged the pre-sale junior champion, Clenagh Lyle was bred by Co Clare breeder Michael Quinn. This wasn’t Lyle’s first time in the show ring, having secured the senior male calf champion title at the society’s national calf show held in Elphin back in September. Sired by Domino and out of homebred Clenagh Tranquil, the 14-month-old embryo-bred bull boasted five stars down the line. Lyle will now join the Burradon pedigree Charolais herd in Northumberland, England, which is owned by Messrs Curry.
Carrigroe Mrs Dunbar a 15-month-old heifer from John Appelbee, Clonakilty, Co Cork, secured €8,300 at the Irish Angus Elite sale in Carrick-on-Shannon.
This didn’t just mark the top price of the sale, but also now rests as the society’s second-highest price for a female, after Lavally Angie broke all records in 2005, selling for €31,000.
Sired by Nightingale Dunbar, she has a wealth of breeding behind her, with her grand-dam Carrigroe Dakota the highest-figured cow on replacement index over the last number of years.
The successful buyer after a flurry of bids was pedigree breeder Kenneth Preston, who runs the Dunbreen herd in Omagh, Co Tyrone.
Sold for €5,600 at the Hereford premier Autumn sale
Bred by Padraig McGrath, Cloonshannagh, Elphin, Co Roscommon, the 13-month-old autumn sale topper is sired by the successful UK-bred Free Town Hotspur.
He had previously sired the top-priced bulls at both Nenagh and Kilmallock for the Kye herd last spring. This bull was sold to pedigree Hereford breeder John Hayes from Ratoath, Co Meath.
