An increased catalogue meant 26 bulls were present on the day, up from 17 in the equivalent sale last year but the earlier sale date meant only similar numbers were sold, with 14 finding new homes (15 in 2016).

The average price on the other hand took a substantial drop to €2,555, back over €400. This was due to a noticeable drop in quality compared with other years, although the better stock still made reasonably high prices.

Topping trade was the day’s pre-sale show champion Knockadrinan Bellboy S622 . Bred and exhibited Tom Reynolds, Bornacoola, Co Leitrim, he is sired by Liley Ed and out of a Gigginstown House Drew-bred dam.

Securing the March 2016 bull for €3,500 was Joseph O'Brien. Reynolds also secured the second top price of the day with Gavan King Mambo R232. Having being bought privately as a calf, this October 2015-born son of HF Rebel claimed a first in his class before selling for €3,400 to KMB farms.

Judge Stephen Wallace of the Baronagh herd selected John McEnroe's Liss Billy S581 as his reserve champion. Sired by stock bull Mogeely Lord Harrow, he also has Liss Tough and Mosstown 'our Lord Ringo in the lineage.

Successful bidder at €2,700 was Vincent Treacy. This was one of four bulls the Liss herd sold on the day, which saw a top of €3,000 for Liss Pal S603.

Again a son of stock bull Lord Harrow, this February 2016-born bull sold to Paul O'Brien.

John McEnroe exhibiting the reserve champion Liss Billy S581 who later sold for €2,700.

Ivan Jones from Co Longford realised €2,850 for his sole entry Creagh Nigel. Five stars down the line, Nigel has Netherton Americano and Luddenmore Fionn in the breeding. Another first prize winner in the pre-sale show, he was secured by Mr John Fennessy.

Westellen Earl was next in the money, selling at €2,800 to Gerard Ryan.

Brought out by John and Kate Tait, Midleton, Co Cork, this September 2015-born bull is another son of HF Rebel out of an Embryo-bred dam from Netherton Evita.
