Cattle in Dayton, Texas, were being moved to higher ground on Sunday evening, as tropical storm Harvey continued to batter the US state.

A video from Harriet Taylor of CNBC shows police, cowboys and dogs moving the cattle along a road in Dayton.

The cattle were moved from flooded lands and were caught on camera as the CNBC team were stopped in traffic while they were on their way to Houston.

Meanwhile, south of Houston in Bay City, farmers on the Whent Ranch are also trying to move their cattle to higher ground as floodwaters continue to rise.

In a Facebook post, the owners of the ranch said: “We are moving some [cattle] to higher ground and trying to monitor the situation the best we can.

“The front entrance at ranch has collapsed [sic], but as of now that’s the only thing we know of.

“We are most concerned with human and animal life right now, material things can be replaced.”

50 inches of rain

Torrential rain has fallen in parts of Texas, with thousands of people in Houston left homeless as upwards of 30 inches of rain fell on the city.

Up to 50 inches of rain is forecast to fall in parts, with the flooding described as “catastrophic”.
