Spring sunshine to start the week, with a very mild day forecast for Monday. Highest temperatures of 13°C to 17°C in moderate southwesterly breezes. Monday night will be dry however, light patchy light rain will develop in parts, especially along west and north coasts.

The outlook is similar for Tuesday, with damp conditions in the morning but overall dry, with spells of spring sunshine once again developing widely. Highest temperatures 11°C to 16°C and westerly winds will be a little fresher, especially across Ulster. Some frost may set in later on Tuesday night, with temperatures fall back to between 3°C and 7°C.

There will still be sunshine by midweek, but rather cloudy and patchy drizzle will affect the Atlantic coastline, but generally dry elsewhere. Maximum temperatures of 13°C to 16°C on Wednesday, in mostly moderate southwest winds, fresh on western and northern coasts.

It will feel a little colder on Thursday with highest temperatures of 9°C to 12°C .It will be quite cloudy with patchy, light rain. There will be longer drier spells through the day as well, with parts of Leinster staying fully dry.

Friday, St Patrick’s Day, is set to be a cool day, with highest temperatures 9°C or 10°C. Rain is forecast for western and northern counties and showers will turn heavier here later. Elsewhere will stay dry, at least during daylight hours. It will be breezy across the country with freshening southwest winds.

Rain

The past week has seen a lot of rain, particularly in parts of east Ulster and east Leinster. There will be some improvements this week and there will be a good deal of dry weather. Rainfall predictions show between 50% and 80% of average rainfall over most of the country, and around normal rainfall expected in the northwest and on the southwest coast.

Temperatures

Mean air temperatures have been close to normal over the last week and soil temperatures are 1°C to 1.5°C above normal. Air temperatures will be well above normal over the next 7 days with mean air temperatures expected to be 1 to 2.5°C above the March average. Some indications of cooler conditions developing on Thursday and Friday.

Sunshine

There has been a varied amount of sunshine across the country over the past week, with values of 50 to 80% of normal in much of Munster and Leinster. Above average elsewhere with 140% of normal along the North coast. The coming week looks set to be brighter, with higher pressure than last week and sunshine is expected to be slightly above average for mid-March.

Drying conditions

Drying conditions are set to be reasonably good overall this coming week.

Spraying

There will be some reasonably good opportunities for spraying at times during the week ahead also.

Field conditions

Trafficability should improve somewhat in well drained and moderately drained soils, however, poorly drained soils will remain saturated.
