It will come as little surprise to most, but August was an exceptionally wet month for those in the west and northwest, according to new Met Éireann figures.

The weather service’s station in Dunsany, Co Meath, recorded 61.1mm in August, which represents 78% of the average monthly rainfall, while Newport, Co Mayo, received 199.2mm, or 150% of the monthly average.

This was the wettest August in Newport since 2009.

Meanwhile, on 22 August, Malin Head, Co Donegal, received a massive 77.2mm, which made it the wettest August day since 1955. Some 63mm of rain fell in a six-hour period.

Farmers in the west and northwest have been forced to house cattle as a result of the heavy rains and the harvest has been at a standstill in many places too.

There were just nine wet days recorded last month at Casement Aerodrome, Co Dublin, while Newport had 24 wet days in August.
