Some 46 awards were presented to students in the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science at an awards ceremony on Thursday night. Monetary awards totalling €20,000, medals and certificates were given to the high-achieving students.

Fourth year animal and crop production student Cliona Ryan received the Agricultural Trust Professional Work Experience (PWE) excellence award.

She also received the Paul Mulhere award for receiving a distinction grade in the PWE module which is a compulsory part of third year. Cliona is one of five students in fourth year ag science who will receive a university scholarship.

There is also an award for the best dairy business project that is named in memory of the late Irish Farmers Journal editor Paddy O’Keeffe. The recipient was Patrick Horgan and the award was presented by Frank Buckley from Teagasc.

“UCD is Ireland’s Global University and is currently ranked within the top 1% of education institutions worldwide,” said UCD dean of agriculture and food science Alex Evans.

“Our focus is to develop the next generation of agriculture and food leaders.”

Irish Farmers Journal head of sales Mary Delaney was the alumni guest speaker for the event, sharing her career journey since graduation with the audience.
