A significant proportion of detergent steriliser products on the market for dairy farmers are no longer registered with the Pesticide Control Service (PCS).

The use of chlorine in cleaning agents for milking equipment is being banned from 2021 and, because registering a product with the PCS costs money, some companies have opted not to register their products for 2020.

This could present a problem for farmers who have these products on the farm and get a cross-compliance inspection.

According to cross-compliance rules, all biocides used on a farm must have a PCS number.

A list of approved detergent steriliser products for cleaning milking equipment is available on the Teagasc website.
