Murtagh Bros based in Mullingar have an 85ac holding on the Westmeath and Longford border on the market.

The property, which is situated in the townland of Derrydooan Middle, benefits from excellent access. It is 3km west of Rathowen village and only 1.5km off the N4 Dublin to Sligo Road.

The Black River forms the western boundary of the property that lies just inside the Westmeath county bounds.

Unusual offering

Auctioneer Dillon Murtagh said: “It’s unusual to get such a big bog like this on the market. While it couldn’t be described as virgin bog it wouldn’t be too far from it.

“It’s reported that it has been used for turf up until now with a good demand in the locality for it as household fuel.”

In the past bogs like this were solely used for turf or peat production, with heightened awareness they could now be viewed as carbon storage and appeal to intensive farming or business looking to potentially offset emissions.

There are plenty future uses to speculate on in this property.

This easily accessed holding is guided at €500,000, or approximately €6,000/ac.
