Monday morning’s general sale in Tuam Co-operative livestock Mart saw an entry of over 210 bullocks, more than 70 heifers and a small number of dry cows.

Bullocks weighing 350kg to 400kg averaged €2.30/kg, with Angus and Herford dairy-bred types making around the €1.80/kg mark. Good quality continental suckler-bred stock generally made between €2.35/kg and €2.45/kg for the most part, hitting a high of €2.57/kg for a 350kg Limousin steer (€900).

In the 400kg to 500kg weight range the average price paid was €2.18/kg. Friesian steers were making €1.55/kg to €1.70/kg while dairy beef types typically traded at between €1.85/kg and €2.05/kg. Suckler bred continental crosses averaged €2.28/kg, with the top third making €2.45/kg and up to €2.63 for a July 2019-born Limousin bullock weighing 410kg (€1080).

Friesian bullocks in the 500kg to 600kg weight range averaged €1.46/kg, diary beef crosses made €1.82/kg, while plainer suckler-bred types averaged between €1.95kg and €2.10/kg. Well-conformed Charolais and Limousin types were made €2.25/kg and €2.40/kg in the main.

Heavy bullocks over 600kg averaged €2.02/kg, with good quality suckler-bred steers averaging €2.13/kg and up to €2.23/kg for a pair of April 2019-born Limousin’s weighing 640kg (€1,430).

This May 2019-born Charolais weighed 595kg and sold for €1220 (€2.05/kg).

This March 2019-born Charolais weighed 680kg and sold for €1,430 (€2.10/kg).

This May 2019-born Limousin weighed 565kg and sold for €1,260 (€2.23/kg).

This March 2019-born Charolais weighed 630kg and sold for €1,340 (€2.13/kg).

Heifers

Heifers weighing 400kg to 500kg averaged €2.10/kg, with the top-third making €2.34/kg. In the 500kg to 600kg weight range, the average price paid was €2.05/kg. On average, the best quality heifers made between €550 and €620 along with their weight while plainer types made between €300 and €450 along with their weight.

This April 2019-born Hereford heifer weighed 540kg and sold for €1,090 (€2.02/kg).
