From brownies to fish fingers; fried chicken to healthy smoothies, the kids who took part in our Kids in the Kitchen video series showed us that children are not only knowledgeable about Irish food; they are well able to make mouth-watering meals the whole family can enjoy.

The Cahill kids from Dovea, Co Tipperary, love taking over the kitchen at home to make some sweet treats.

Being home and away from their friends during the COVID-19 pandemic hasn't been easy – our kids have missed daily interactions and socialisation that occurs during the average school day, but they took lockdown measures seriously. Many of them voiced worry and concern about their grandparents and other elderly friends and family members.

They stayed home and took their learning opportunities as they came, including helping out their family in the kitchen.

Dani Kerwick Bergin loves school, her friends and family, horses and cooking.

Learning about food – where it comes from, how it's grown and processed – is so important, but equally, learning how to cook, read a recipe and sit down for a family meal teaches our kids about mathematics, develops their fine motor and problem-solving skills and shows how to have conversations and gather around the table (and in an increasingly closed-off world, that last lesson has become more important than ever).

Four-year-old Nora loves to forage, garden and cook with her dad and little sister.

We at Irish Country Living want to thank all of our Kids in the Kitchen participants and wish them a well-deserved, very happy summer holiday! Get out and explore, learn a new skill and, all going well, gear up for a new school year in September.

Lucy Quinn loves baking and sharing treats with her family.

*Although our series has ended for the summer, if you have a budding chef in your household and would like to share what they've been cooking up over their summer holidays, we would still love to see! Send videos and recipes to our WhatsApp: 089-249 9922.
