The popular labour-saving tips feature has returned and will be included in the buildings page at least once a month. Our first instalment includes this handy idea of a wire running over a crush that aids administering animal health treatments.

It was erected on the farm of David Leydon, Elphin, Co Roscommon, by his neighbour Gerry Burke of Lackan Fencing.

A tensioner attached to the frame on one side allows the wire to be tightened quickly, if necessary.

Gerry says: “Many people have a crush erected alongside a wall and they use this to hold the dosing gun, syringes, etc, when moving animals in and out of the crush. I had a similar issue to David in my own yard of having nowhere to leave anything I was using in between treating animals or if I needed two hands free. I erected a similar setup and thought that it would also work a treat in his yard.”

The setup simply involved constructing a U-frame with 40mm box iron and fixing this to penning at either side of the crush.

A nylon roller with a hook for quick attachment simply rolls along the wire.

A line of standard 12-gauge tensioned wire was run through a nylon roller, which has a hook attached and is fastened to the U-frame with one side fitted with a tensioner for tightening the wire, if required, as shown in the photos.

The roller simply pulls along the wire as you move up or down the crush and will hold many containers which have a hold or fitting at the bottom where straps can be fastened.

When not in use the application gun is simply left sitting in the upright at the front of the crush.

Gerry says it is also a safer option as there is a reduced risk of product leaking from the container or hose and on to the operator if strapped and hung over your shoulders, while your two hands can be freed up quickly if required. Where dealing with smaller 100ml bottles and injection needles, for example, he says a bucket or similar container can be hung from the hook and serve the same purpose.
