The percentage of beef products on retail shelves displaying a Bord Bia quality assurance mark increased from 88% in the fourth quarter of 2018 to 95% in the first quarter this year. However, for the same period the total number of beef products on the shelves fell.

The proportion of pork products with a QA mark rose from 84% in Q4 2018 to 85%.

Chicken increased from 74% to 78%.

Lamb also rose from 94% to 98%.

Meanwhile, 93% of bacon products had a QA mark.

Taking a look at retailers, the top three in quarter one of this year were Aldi, Lidl and Tesco, with SuperValu and Dunnes on par.

Dunnes Stores had the highest number of products bearing a quality assurance mark on its shelves. However, Aldi had the highest proportion, at 92%.

For the first quarter of 2019, Tesco and Lidl and Dunnes all saw a 2% drop in their proportions of QA facings, standing at 79%, 81% and 74%respectively. SuperValu increased from 61% to 74%.
