Mineral supplementation of ewes post-mating is the most common option selected by the majority of the 18,000-plus participants in the Sheep Welfare Scheme (SWS).

Questions each year arise as to the exact timing of supplementation.

Some farmers prefer to administer supplementation in advance of flushing ewes and there is no problem with this, as long as the method of supplementation administered ensures cover is provided for at least 60 days post-mating.

Combination

The post-mating period commences the day ewes are joined with rams.

One product can be administered that covers at least the 60-day period or a combination of products can be used.

For example, if a drench is administered three weeks before mating starts and the product provides supplementation for 60 days, then ewes must receive repeat treatment at day 39 after rams have been released.

Animals must receive repeat treatment at the required time frame to ensure there is no break in supplementation.

There are also no issues where the flock is divided into numerous batches for mating – just ensure this is recorded accurately in the scheme recording book.

It should also be pointed out that invoice dates and volumes purchased will be used to confirm adequate supplementation has been provided.

Product information

Remember, the label of the product used must clearly state the product is suitable for ewes.

It must also specify a duration of cover for ewes – for example “this product is effective for X days or X weeks”, etc.

The product must also specify a dose rate and, in the case of boluses, for example, it might be “one bolus per ewe “or for mineral buckets the label may read “one bucket per 30 ewes will last for 15 days”.

In relation to purchasing mineral supplements, once the manufacturer of the product, the wholesaler or retailer are registered with the Department as a food business operator, the product will be considered eligible for the purposes of the SWS.
