Munster regional chair John Coughlan, national treasurer Tim Cullinan and livestock chair Angus Woods have all been nominated to run for IFA president.

At the deadline of 10am on Wednesday morning, national returning officer Richard Kennedy announced that three candidates had secured the nominations of their own county executive and five county chairs.

John Coughlan from the Buttevant branch is nominated by Cork north, Cork central, Cork west, Limerick, Kilkenny and Mayo. Tim Cullinan from the Toomevara branch is nominated by Tipperary north, Tipperary south, Offaly, Meath, Donegal and Clare. Angus Woods from the Barndarrig branch is nominated by Wicklow, Wexford, Carlow, Roscommon, Laois and Louth.

Deputy president

Two candidates have been nominated to run for IFA deputy president: Cavan’s Thomas Cooney and Kildare-west Wicklow’s Brian Rushe.

Thomas Cooney is nominated by Cavan, Longford, Tipperary south, Meath, Donegal and Monaghan. Brian Rushe is nominated by Kildare, Louth, Roscommon, Offaly, Cork north and Limerick.

Munster regional chair

Three candidates have been nominated to run for the position of Munster regional chair. They are Clare IFA chair Willie Hanrahan (nominated by Clare, Tipperary south and Cork west), Cork central IFA chair Harold Kingston (nominated by Cork central, Cork north and Limerick) and Pat O’Driscoll (nominated by Kerry, Tipperary north and Waterford).

Connacht regional chair

Two candidates have been nominated to run for Connacht regional chair. They are John Hanley (nominated by Roscommon and Leitrim) and Pat Murphy (nominated by Galway and Mayo).

Leinster and Ulster

The south Leinster chair Tom Short has been returned unopposed for a second two-year term and Ulster north Leinster chair Nigel Renaghan has also been returned unopposed for a second two-year term.

Next steps

Debates will begin on 21 October and will run until 21 November. Voting then will take place in each of the IFA’s 945 branches from Monday 25 November until Friday 13 December.

The election count will take place in Dublin on Tuesday 17 December, with the 16th president of the IFA taking up office at the association’s AGM in January 2020.
