She might photograph million-dollar luxury homes along the Florida coast for a living but when it comes to renovating her own farmhouse in Co Mayo, Jessica Glynn is not afraid to get her hands dirty.

Though she could probably take or leave the tiling.

“You wouldn’t think a small shower would take that long,” smiles Jessica, who moved to her husband Gerard’s family beef and sheep farm in January 2021.

Jessica Glynn specialises in interiors and architecture photography.

But as well as their own home, Jessica has another project keeping her busy; the release of her second book, Beachside: Windsor Architecture and Design, which offers an enviable insight into one of Florida’s most exclusive communities.

Think Room To Improve but without any budget constraints … or Dermot Bannon for that matter.

Originally from Long Island, New York, Jessica first fell in love with photography in high school and went on to study photo journalism in Boston University.

It was actually in an Irish bar in that city that she first met Gerard. Raised in Kiltimagh, he was studying farm management but went into construction after moving to the States, going on to specialise in renovations in the high-end Palm Beach area of Florida.

Jessica’s career also took off in Florida after she began to focus on real estate photography (photographing homes for sale), as well as shooting for interior designers who wanted professional photos for their portfolios and for publication in glossy interior magazines.

It’s the dream job for anybody obsessed with architecture and design.

“Some of these homes have tennis courts and spas and equestrian centres and just anything you can think of,” says Jessica. But her job is to get that perfect shot that captures “what it feels like to live there”.

“What it feels like to use that kitchen or use that bedroom every day, so whoever sees that picture can imagine themselves being there,” she explains.

Move to Mayo

In 2019, however, the couple made a major life decision when they decided to buy a house in Co Mayo at auction and relocate with their daughter Keira. Though due to COVID-19 it was actually January 2021 before they arrived in Ireland.

The house – which is located in Kilmovee – was unfinished inside and the couple have been busy renovating since their arrival, sharing their progress on Instagram @glynnfarms

“I love a modern farmhouse feel, something sort of Scandinavian but still a little bit traditional,” says Jessica of her inspiration.

Gerard is running the farm with his father, John, with Keira (12) also getting hands-on.

“She’s pulled a few lambs, she loves it,” smiles Jessica, who adds that Keira got her own small flock at Christmas with three purebred Zwartble sheep joining the farm.

Since arriving in Ireland, Jessica has been working to establish her photography business here and has started collaborating with interior designer Geri O’Toole, as well as completing shoots for House and Home Magazine with designer Carla Benedetti, as well as with Glenstal Abbey.

In the meantime, however, she has also returned to the US for work and has just released her second book with New York-based Vendome Press, focusing on the planned community of Windsor on the barrier island in Vero Beach, Florida.

The brainchild of Galen and Hilary Weston (of Brown Thomas) and planned by “New Urbanists” Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, the exclusive seaside village boasts homes by A-list architects and interior designers with drool-worthy details, like bougainvillea-framed entrances, airy open-plan living rooms and bedrooms that burst out into balconies with ocean views.

Jessica has actually been photographing in Windsor for 12 years and had over 10,000 images to choose from for the book, which is co-authored by Hadley Keller. She believes it will be of interest to anyone who appreciates architecture and design and will be hosting a signing event at Mount Falcon Estate in Ballina on Sunday 27 March from 2-4pm, with a talk by interior designer Geri O’Toole. Admission is free but donations to a raffle in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice will be appreciated.

And while she will continue to commute to the US for work three to four times a year, Ireland is certainly home now for Jessica and family. She would love to increase her client base here and even has a wish-list of places she would love to photograph, including Adare Manor, Ballyfin Demesne in Co Laois, Breac House in Donegal and Ormiston House outside Belfast.

Though there is one thing we are sadly short of in Ireland.

“Sunshine,” laughs Jessica.
