The newly formed giant, to be called Nutrien will produce and distribute over 34m tonnes of fertiliser annually.

Nutrien shares began trading on the Toronto and New York Stock Exchange at the start of January.

Agrium and PotashCorp first announced the deal in 2016 but did not receive the final regulatory permission required to complete the deal until last week.

When the deal was announced, the companies said the new entity would generate sales of about $20bn and profits (EBITDA) of some $4bn before synergies (based on 2015 figures). Nutrien expects to save $500m annually through operating synergies.

Nutrien will now become the world’s largest potash producer, with over 22m tonnes or approximately 25% of global capacity. It will operate six potash mines in Saskatchewan along with another mine in New Brunswick.

Nitrogen

It will also become the world’s third-largest nitrogen producer with close to 8m tonnes of ammonia capacity and operations in 5 countries.

It also has the most diverse phosphate offering with two large phosphate mines and processing facilities in the US.

The company also now has an unparalleled global reach through more than 1,500 farm retailers. It will employ almost 20,000 employees and has operations and investments in 14 countries.
