Calf numbers are in freefall now, with only tail-end calves on offer. Prices are holding so far for Friesian bulls, which are selling from €100 to €120 for average-quality types at the moment.
Again, as in previous weeks, the best prices are being paid for better-quality types. Shippers are still actively sourcing calves at marts around the country.
Angus calf prices are holding well in the past week, with the average heifer making over €150/head, while the average bull is making around €200.
Hereford bulls and heifers are selling for €230 and €185 on average, while continental calves continue to make from €200 to €450, depending on age and quality. In some areas, top-quality Charolais-cross calves are making over €450/head.
Cull cow prices strong
In the past week, we have seen another very strong trade for all fleshed cull cows.
Agents and feeders continue to snap up short-keep and slaughter-fit types.
Continental fleshed cows are selling mainly from €1.85/kg to €1.95/kg and to over €2.00/kg in the case of young cow heifers.
Feeding continental cows are selling from €1.60/kg upwards, while very thin cows are making from €300 over the weight and higher.
Demand for Friesian cows continues to be very strong also.
Fleshed Friesian cows, like continentals, are being met with very strong demand.
Prices are ranging mainly from €1.75/kg to €1.85/kg, with feeding cows selling mainly from €1.40/kg to €1.60/kg.
