Last Monday’s sale at Carrigallen saw an entry of about 140 cattle and cows on offer, along with over 200 lambs and ewes.
Mart manager Helen Kells said that the trade was very strong once again, with plenty of demand for all types of cattle and cows.
Helen said that there was another strong entry of cull cows which were a steady trade.
At the top of the market, very good-quality heavy cows sold to as much as €2.10/kg.
The majority of fleshed and short-keep cows made from €1.75/kg to €1.85/kg, with slightly better types making around the €1.90/kg mark.
There was a good number of Friesian cull cows on offer also, mainly good-quality types and carrying a good level of flesh.
They sold mainly from €1.20/kg to €1.30/kg and up to €1.63/kg at the top of the market. Lesser-quality Friesian cull cows sold from €1.00/kg to €1.10/kg.
There was a small entry of bullocks on offer, which were good continental and Hereford types.
At the top of the market, heavy continentals over 550kg sold from €1,060 to €1,240.
The majority of those on offer were lighter stores from 350kg to 450kg.
These sold mainly from €750 to €890/head, with better-quality types selling to €1,010 for 410kg.
There was a stronger entry of about 60 store and forward store heifers on offer at the sale. Heavy heifers over 600kg were only available in small numbers and sold from €1,300 to €1,320/head.
Forward store heifers from 550kg to 600kg sold from €1,000 for a plain Limousin-cross to €1,320 for a top-quality 575kg Limousin. Other plainer heifers in the same weight range made from €1,150 to €1,270/head.
Heifers from 500kg to 550kg sold mainly from €1,000/head to a top of €1,360, which was paid for a 530kg Limousin.
There were some dairy-cross heifers available, which made from €880 to €1,150.
Lighter store heifers from 400kg to 500kg sold mainly from €1,000 to €1,200 for continentals, with plainer types making from €870 upwards.
The sheep sale saw lambs sell mainly from €110 to €125/head, with some making up to €128/head. Heavy butchers’ lambs sold from €123 to €124/head.
Commission rates are €9 to the buyer and €11 to €20 to the seller.
