Monday’s sale at Carlow Mart saw a special 60th anniversary sale take place. The sale saw a large entry of stock on offer and a very strong trade, particularly for forward stores and for cows.
Heavy bullocks were met with very strong demand, especially for top-quality types.
At the top of the market, heavy bullocks sold to €1,000 along with the weight, while the majority of good-quality types sold from €2.10/kg to €2.20/kg, with 650kg coming into €1,350/head.
Bullocks from 500kg to 600kg sold mainly from €2.10/kg to €2.35/kg for good-quality continentals, while some plainer-quality types made around the €2.00/kg mark. Friesians sold from €1.55/kg to €1.60/kg.
Lighter Angus and Hereford stores sold for around the €2.00/kg mark, with some making up to €2.10/kg.
Heifers over 500kg sold mainly from €1.90/kg to €2.00/kg for better-quality types. Demand was strong for heifers from 400kg to 500kg and these sold mainly from €1.90/kg to €2.00/kg for Herefords.
Good-quality continental weanling heifers sold from €2.20/kg to €2.40/kg.
Cull cows were met with strong demand and forward types sold mainly from €1.30/kg to €1.40/kg for Friesians, with continentals making over €1.60/kg.
Commission rates are €1.85 to €2.00 to the buyer and 1.75% to the seller.
