Analysis of MartWatch data has shown that the average 650kg heifer was €46/head more expensive from March to June 2017 versus 2016, an increase of 7c/kg or 4%.

The average 650kg steer saw prices €22/head higher from March to June 2017 compared with March to June 2016.

Although strengthening recently, beef prices are just 1.3c/kg (steers) to 3.9c/kg (heifers) higher, well short of making up for the higher store prices.

The price rise was also exacerbated by reduced supply of heavy animals – numbers are back by 10% to 30%.

Buyers have been paying for quality. The bottom third of heifers over 600kg were up €42/head, but U grade heifers rose by €70/head. Plain steer prices hardly moved, but the top third rose by €35/head.
