There was a large turnout for this week’s sale in Bandon.
Manager Tom McCarthy put the surge in numbers down to recent poor weather and the fact it was a bank holiday sale.
The vast majority were Friesian or traditional breed crosses, born from January to April 2016 and weighing between 460kg and 560kg.
These bullocks born in February 2016 and weighing 512kg, sold for €830 (€1.62/kg).
Angus and Hereford bullocks made up just under half of the bullocks that passed through the sales ring, with strong demand from feeders.
Prices ranged from €1.75/kg up to €1.90/kg.
Continentals were short in numbers, and of what was available coloured continentals were making from €2.05 up to €2.35 while dairy cross continental were making about 5c/kg more than traditional beef crosses.
These bullocks born January 2016 and weighing 561kg, sold for €1,045, (€1.86/kg).
Friesians made up about 40% of what was available in and with a few exceptions most made between €800 and €950.
Prices for Friesians were very consistent, with most selling from €1.50/kg to €1.65/kg.
