The final batch of heifers were slaughtered just before Christmas on the Irish Farmers Journal's Thrive demonstration farm in Cashel, Co Tipperary.

They made an average of €1,255/head, with an average carcase weight of 308kg. They received a base price of €3.80/kg. However, they were slaughtered in Foyle Meats in Co Donegal which offers a 10c/kg bonus for cattle from 300kg to 380kg carcase weight. This, alongside the 20c/kg quality assurance payment, brought the average price/kg to €4.07 – three heifers failed to reach a 300kg carcase and therefore were not eligible for the 10c/kg bonus.

The DBI, developed by ICBF and Teagasc is a tool similar to the replacement and terminal beef indexes which aims to help farmers identify beef bulls with superior genetics for the dairy-beef industry.

Tag 1078. This BB4611 sired heifer (DBI €33, beef value €149) had a carcase weight of 300.6kg, graded R=3= with a killout of 54.1% and made €1,232.

This BB4286 sired heifer (DBI €97, beef value €142) had a carcase weight of 363kg, graded R+3+ with a killout of 55.5% and made €1,510.

Tag 2022. This BB4286 sired heifer (DBI €97, beef value €142) had a carcase weight of 327.9kg, graded R=3+ with a killout of 52.7% and made €1,344.

Tag 1373. This DFD sired heifer (DBI €112, beef value €151) had a carcase weight of 272.1kg, graded R=2+ with a killout of 54% and made €1,088.

Tag 2035. Thsi DBZ sired heifer (DBI €84, beef value €146) had a carcase weight of 294.9kg, graded R=3= with a killout of 52.7% and made €1,180.
