Calf numbers are increasing quickly, with calf sales now quite strong at marts. In terms of prices, strong demand is continuing to underpin the trade so far. The average Friesian bull calf is selling for just under €100/head according to ICBF data.

Mart managers are reporting light and young Friesian bulls to be making from €60 to €80, with shipper activity increasing for these.

Farmers’ Friesian calves continue to be a fairly strong trade and are making from €100 to €150, with the majority selling for around €120/head. These are mostly three- to four-week- old well-framed calves.

There are a number of Jersey bulls on offer. Prices range from €15 to €40/head with the average making about €25/head.

Demand for Angus bulls and heifers is quite strong in most areas and prices are holding well as a result. The average Angus bull calf is making from €200 to €230, with top-quality types still making €280 and more. Heifer calves are selling mainly from €200 to €225. Again, farmers are most active for better-quality and older types.

Hereford bulls and heifers are a strong trade. Bulls are averaging about €280 to €300, while heifers are selling mainly from €240 to €280. The supply of continental-bred calves is increasing, but from a low base. Demand and prices continues to be very hot around the country, with farmers paying from €300 to €450 for three- to four-week-old Limousin and Charolais-cross calves. Again, the bigger prices are being given for the stronger calves with better conformation.
