There was a bumper entry of 512 suckler calves at Armoy Mart, Co Antrim this week.
With a special entry of Charolais sired calves, bidding was brisk resulting in an excellent day’s trading.
With a large turnout of buyers, there was plenty of demand for top quality stock.
Lighter calves were a slightly easier trade compared to heavier animals, but there were plenty of buyers on hand for smaller, younger lots.
Heavy bull calves were an excellent trade with buyers looking for animals suitable for intensive finishing this winter.
Charolais cross calves weighing 350kg to 400kg were generally selling from £880 to £1,000 (260p to 290p/kg) with a few exceptional quality animals over 400kg selling from £1,010 to just over £1,300 per head.
