Stakeholders and those interested in the beef industry have been invited to produce written submissions on the future of the sector.

The submissions will form part of the Joint Committee on Agriculture’s work to identify policy adjustments to ensure beef continues to play a key role in agri food industry.

Committee chair, Pat Deering said: “The Agriculture Committee has spent a significant amount of time examining the beef sector and its vulnerability in light of Brexit, as well as the possible opportunities that a more diverse global market could offer Irish beef farmers.”

“This call for submissions is part of the process of engagement that we hope will contribute towards supporting a strong beef industry. I would encourage stakeholders and interested parties to make their submissions in order to ensure that their voices are heard at this crucial time for the industry.”

SWOT

The committee is focusing on the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis undertaken by Department of Agriculture in relation to the beef sector as part of Food Wise 2025.

Submissions are being sought on the following areas:

  • The extent to which the analysis undertaken in 2015 needs to be revisited in light of emerging challenges in 2019 and anticipated challenges in the future.
  • The measures that are/should be in place to support the strengths of the beef sector.
  • The remedies that are/should be in place to address the weaknesses of the beef sector.
  • The strategies that are/should be in place to exploit the opportunities associated with the beef sector.
  • The measures that are/should be in place to ensure that the threats associated with the beef sector are mitigated.

    • The closing date for submissions is Thursday, 14 March at 5pm, with public hearings expected to take place in March/April.
