Mary Ledman, Daily Dairy Report dairy economist, says: “Rapid growth in the Mexican food industry is the primary driver.”
The shift in consumption patterns towards added-value products that offer health benefits are curtailing fluid milk demand in Mexico even though these products are coming in at a higher cost to consumers.
Mexico’s annual production of non-fat dry milk has been steady since 2014 at 50,000 tonnes due to lower-priced imported product. Over the same period, consumption of non-fat dry milk has grown from 258,000t in 2014 to an estimated 320,000t this year.
