Don Stiffe has performed with the cream of the Irish folk scene over the years. The Kilfenora Céilí Band, Sharon Shannon, Dolores Keane, Maura O’Connell and the Hernon Family are among those who have savoured the unique quality of this cherished Galway entertainer.
Currently on tour with Joanie Madden and Cherish the Ladies on the east coast of America, the Headford-based singer remains a firm favourite with audiences wherever he goes.
Longing for the Day is the title of his brand new album which features 11 tracks, three of which have been composed by Don himself. The song You’ll Always Be My Mother is a gripping and haunting song, and a loving tribute to the woman who reared him after he was adopted from Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea.
His story-in-song about Celia Griffin is another compelling composition, while Connemara my Home celebrates his love and affection for the most westerly part of Galway.
The album opens with the novel and most engaging song, The Little Boot I Bought For John Prine, composed by Pete O’Hanlon – and one that looks set to secure plenty of airplay in the months ahead. The Isle of Innisfree, composed by Dick Farrelly, was the party song of Don’s father, who was a flag-bearer with the St Patrick’s Brass Band in Galway.
Don goes country for Souvenirs, a duet with Susan McCann on a song composed by Niall Finnegan. This looks set to be a another favourite with radio listeners.
Other songs from the pens of Jimmy McCarthy, John Faulkner, Johnny McEvoy and Mickey O’Connell are among the numbers featured on this collection.
The album was produced by John Faulkner with accompaniment by Frankie Gavin, Nollaig Casey, Joanie Madden, Frank Kilkenny and Mick Kinsella. Don is always so much at home when on stage and taking his ballads and songs to appreciative audiences.
“I love performing whether solo or with a band. I do my own thing in my own accent. People are great and I think there will always be a place for songs with good lyrics that touch the heart. I am grateful to all the supporters who came on board for my Kickstarter campaign and helped me so much in bringing Longing for the Day to fruition. Grateful thanks to John Faulkner and also to Paul Mulligan out in Kinvara and everyone who helped me on this journey,” says Don.
