Country against Cancer

A Country Against Cancer fundraising weekend takes place in the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney on 27-29 October.

The venture is being organised by Jerry Moriarty from the Gap of Dunloe, whose partner Eileen died 16 months ago after coping with cancer for over two years. Her mantra was ‘life is for living’ and this weekend will celebrate all that she loved about life.

Music on Friday night will be provided by Michael Collins and his band, and dancing later to Patrick Feeney and band.

There’s a céilí on Saturday afternoon from 2.30pm, with Tim Joe and Ann Riordan. Patrick O’Sullivan, Dermot Moriarty, Trudi Lawlor and Mike Denver and band will provide the music for dancing on Saturday night. Sunday sees an afternoon céilí with Uí Bhriain and the weekend rounds off with a performance from Best of Friends, followed by Michael English and his band.

Gala country night

In Waterford a special night of country music will take place in aid of of Pieta House and local First Responders. It will be held in the Park Hotel in Dungarvan on 13 November, starting at 8pm.

Teresa Joyce, one of the organisers, says: “We are delighted to have some of the big names from the Irish country scene join us in Dungarvan.

“We are delighted to have Robert Mizzell, Patrick Feeney, Gary Gamble, Louise Morrissey, John McNicholl and, of course, our own special local favourite Paddy O’Brien, on the bill, all backed by the excellent Ryan Turner Band. The night is in support of Pieta House and local First Responders. This will be a special night of quality country music in Dungarvan,” says Teresa.

New management for Eamon Jackson

Eamon Jackson has signed a new management deal with Harmony Music. Bob Condon, who has long years of experience on the management circuit, is now taking the bookings and filling the diary for the Cavan man and his five-piece country band.

The band is leaning heavily towards the traditional style of country music, with fiddle, steel guitar, keyboards, electric guitar, bass and drums, and aims to provide a dancing and listening programme that will delight audiences around the country and overseas.

Eamon’s new album, Texas, features 11 songs ranging from the title track to Country Roads, You’re My Best Friend, and I Recall a Gypsy Woman.

Carmel keeps it country

Former Glór Tíre winner Carmel McLoughlin has been keeping it country for many years. The Roscommon singer is in constant demand for her solo show and remains hugely popular, especially on the western circuit. Carmel has been to the studios in recent weeks and her new single, Walk Out Backwards, a traditional country song written and recorded by American legend Bill Anderson many years ago, is her latest release.
