5.30pm: Rebecca Carroll from Animal Health Ireland outlines her five top tips for a healthy herd/flock.

6.00pm: Calving the cow and care of the calf: live demo in association with vet Donal Lynch and Irish Farmers Journal beef editor Adam Woods – back by popular demand.

6.30pm: Dairy calf-to-beef demo: Aidan Brennan, dairy specialist with the Irish Farmers Journal, outlines the important targets to hit with dairy-bred calves.

7.00pm: Breeding profitable sheep: Darren Carty, sheep specialist, Irish Farmers Journal, outlines what attributes he looks for in a ewe.

  • Breeding demonstration in association with ICBF – taking place every 20 minutes from 4pm. Chris Daly outlines the importance of looking at sub-traits such as fertility and milk when using the maternal index to make breeding decisions.
  • Dairy beef calves: our dairy beef heifer calves will be grazing beside the yard. The plan is to run these in an 18- to 20-month beef system, with a target final liveweight of 500kg in late 2018. Their current weight is 133kg and our targeted 2017 housing weight is 230kg.
