Cause
It is caused by a bacteria called actinomyces bovis, however it is a sporadic condition. It is introduced to the tissue around the bone through penetrating wounds.
Symptoms
The infection takes some time to become established and by the time it is noticed and it is chronic and can be quite difficult to treat. It can be confused with timber tongue (see page 61) which is an infection of the soft tissue around the mouth.
Treatment
Sodium iodide is the treatment of choice to deal with the infection. Concurrent antimicrobial and antimicrobial therapy are also recommended.
