One of the most unusual machines at the show had to be Cross Engineering’s pineapple harvester.
Cross has spent the past two years designing and building the machine, which is a world’s first.
Although named a pineapple harvester, the function of the machine is to actually harvest the remains of the pineapple plants.
The pineapple itself is harvested by hand. However, for each hectare of pineapple plants, there is around 80t of green material.
The green material is pulled out of the ground using conveyors, before being transported into a chopping unit.
Here, the plant is shredded before being sent up a chute and into a trailer, destined for an anaerobic digester.
The machine is on tracks (8ft x 14in) so it can travel over small drains. It’s powered from an FPT engine rated at 240hp. The machine is destined for Costa Rica next week.
