Each year, the UCD AgSoc raises money for chosen charities through events held over the college term, with over €42,000 raised last year alone.

This year, the chosen charities are Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and Embrace Farm.

Cystic Fibrosis Ireland was set up to improve treatment and facilities for people with cystic fibrosis. Embrace Farm supports people who have been injured in farm accidents and families that have lost loved ones to farm accidents.

Five-star heifer

In a bid to raise money for these charities, the Charolais Society has donated a five-star heifer for AgSoc to raffle off.

The heifer, Skidoo 96 Marie, comes from one of the oldest pedigree Charolais herds in Ireland, Skidoo. She is a daughter of the high index sire Blelack Digger and carries five stars on the replacement index with a value of €87 and terminal index value of €120.

AgSoc auditor Seán Holian said: “I would like to thank Nevan McKiernan from the Irish Charolais Society for all his hard work in sourcing the heifer for UCD AgSoc and making all of this possible.”

Tickets for the heifer are priced at €5 and will be sold at marts and various other agricultural events around the country until the raffle on 6 April.
