Tullamore was the venue for the Irish Angus Cattle Society premier show and sale last Saturday, which saw a top price of €3,600 given for a Coneyisland Legend son exhibited by John and Cathy Farrell, Curraghroe, Co Roscommon. Of the 30 bulls catalogued for sale, active demand from commercial buyers helped generate a more than satisfactory clearance of 90% (up from 75% last year), while the average of €2,600 was slightly down on the previous year (€2,800).

It was the Angus bull Dillon Kevin The Second, a Coneyisland Legend son, that took the top price of €3,600. Exhibited by John and Cathy Farrell, Mountdillon, Curraghroe, Co Roscommon, he is out of a Ballyarden Billy cow and was purchased by John Donoghue, Moylough, Ballinasloe, Co Galway, for €3,600.

Next highest at €3,300 was Moydrum Liverpool, tapped forward by judge Gerry Corrigan, Tonroe House, Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, as the supreme male champion.

Bred and exhibited by Michael and Oliver Flanagan, Moydrum Castle Pedigree Herds, Moydrum, Athlone, this February 2014-born bull is a son of Ballyshannon Eric and is out of a Cardona Black Star dam. The buyer at €3,300 was Hugh O’Reilly, Clondalee, Enfield, Co Meath.

In reserve was Satanna Limelight, bred and exhibited by Thomas and Anne Shryane, Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon. Sired by Fordel Eisenhower and out of an Ajshoj Shuman dam, he sold for €3,100 to John Regan, Boyle, Co Roscommon. Meanwhile, Frank McKiernan, Lacken Lower, Ballinagh, Co Cavan, took home €3,150 for his bull, Drumcrow Lamour, a Drumcrow Partner Perfect son, out of a Rawburn Eventer dam. The buyer was Pat Reilly, Castletowngeoghegan, Co Westmeath.

Following this, Turlough Kalen, bred and exhibited by Martin McHugh, Turlough, Castlebar, Co Mayo, sold for €3,050 to John Furey, Derryvilla, Edenderry, Co Offaly. This bull is sired by Crerogue Ellard and is out of a Kilkelly Bobby dam.

  • €2,750 for Aughnamona Lord Ivan, bred and exhibited by Geraldine Shanley and Donal Spring, Bornacoola, Co Leitrim. Sired by Aughnamona Hedian, he is out of a DMM Flexor dam.
  • €2,700 for Berry Ken bred by Patrick Murphy, Ross, Glasson, Athlone, Co Westmeath. He is a son of Goulding Jumbo King and is out of a Nakkeg Nord dam.
  • €2,700 for Kingsbury Lord Jeremy, bred and exhibited by Brendan Hynes, Moycullen, Co Galway. By Aynho Rossiter Eric, he is out of a Kingsbury Ultan dam.
  • €2,500 for Coolcran Ken, bred and exhibited by Michael J Horan, Coolcran, Ballina, Co Mayo. A son of Currower Edmund, he is out of a Breaffy Preserve dam.
  • Females

    From a small entry of females, the championship went to Lodgetown Kerry, a Clooncolligan Domino daughter, bred and exhibited by Dermot Kilcrann, Tarmonbarry, Co Roscommon. Out of a Ballyarden Billy dam, she was unsold in the ring.

    In reserve was Rockville K Tess, bred and exhibited by Anthony Dockery, Elphin Co Roscommon.

    By Logboy Fergal and out of a Shankill Mick dam, she sold for €3,000 to Clintown House Stud, Mullingar, Co Westmeath.
