The first prize winning Simmental cow Clonagh Willow clinched the overall beef animal championship and the Dan Joe O’Regan perpetual cup at Belgooly show, Co Cork. Brought out by local breeder Adrian Bateman, this October 2008 cow is sired by Hochenhaule Maverick and was originally bred by Garreth Behan.
Not stopping there, Adrian also went on to claim the Reserve beef interbreed with his homebred Hereford Slieveroe Elsie. This nine-year-old Kilronan Leader daughter had already secured first prize in the senior female class earlier in the day.
Simmental again for calf interbreed
The Simmental breed were again to the fore in the interbreed calf championship, when beef judge Brian Jeffery tapped forward Brideland Gatsby (photo below). Bred by Ava O’Leary, Ballincollig, Cork and sired by Hercules, Gatsby is the first calf from show cow Littlerock Dervela.
In reserve was Belgian Blue calf prize winner Davina bred by Tim O’Donovan, Dunmanway. Sired by Empire, Davina was exhibited by Daniel O’Donovan.
Dairy judging
In the dairy ring, judge James Crowley tapped forward Lisduff Emmy 53 as his supreme dairy champion. Bred by John O’Sullivan, Whitechurch, Co Cork, seven-year-old Emmy is sired by MD Delight Durham Atlas.
Claiming reserve honours with Daffodil was Ricky Barrett of Ballinhassig, Co Cork. This in-milk heifer class winner is sired by Gilette Jerrick and out of dam Laurelelm Minister. Before choosing his champion and reserve, judge James Crowley complimented exhibitors on the quality of the cattle they had out, with particular reference to the championship line up.
Angus ring
Mogeely Miylo P291 claimed the top spot in the Angus ring and secured her second championship from her first two outings. Bred by Albert De Cogan, Castlemartyr, Co Cork this January 2014-born heifer is sired by three time All-Ireland Champion and past stock bull Rosemead Karona.
Second in line and reserve Aberdeen Angus champion was successful show cow Shankill Lady Helton. This seven-year-old was brought out by Eustace and Deirdre Burke of Carrigaline, Co Cork and is sired by Cashelane Bart.
Pairs
In the pairs competition it was Tim O’Donovan, Dunmanway who caught the eye of the judge with his two senior Belgian Blue cows.
In the dairy ring pairs, John O’Sullivan, Whitechurch took top honours.
