Ireland’s beef barons feature strongly on the Sunday Times rich list once again, with Larry Goodman ranking at number 22. However, at the top of the agricultural and food millionaires are Deirdre, Mark and Aoife Lyons, worth €1.7bn. Ranked in eighth place, the Lyons’ are due to inherit the animal feed and bio-technology company Alltech.
John Magnier, owner of Coolmore stud in Tipperary, is worth €1.099bn and came in 14th place. Meanwhile, Aberdeen Angus breeder and Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary is ranked 16th, worth €10.32bn.
Beef barons
After that, we enter beef baron territory. Larry and Kitty Goodman are ranked 22nd, down one spot from last year. The ABP owners are worth €633m.
Brothers Bert and Maurice Allen, who sold their 50% share in Slaney Meats to ABP two years ago, came in 41st place. They are reportedly worth €345m.
Grain
In 52nd place is Robert Barnett, who chairs the Belfast-based company W&R Barnett. Worth €268m, Barnett's company is a joint owner of R&H Hall with Origin Enterprises. He also owns Fair Winter Farm stud in Buckinghamshire.
Padraic and Martin McHale of McHale Engineering are worth €182m, up €81m from last year and ranked 75th.
Meat
Back to beef again, owners of Meath-based Kepak the Keating family are 93rd on Ireland's rich list with €158m to their name.
Pat and Una McDonagh from the fast food chain Supermacs are in 94th place, worth €157m. The owner of EuroAuctions in Tyrone, Derek Keys, is worth €117m and came in 128th. He tied with Eugene Lannon, of the chicken hatchery and breeding company Western Brand Poultry, based in Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo.
Meanwhile, Northern Ireland beef barons the Dobson brothers, who previously owned Dunbia, are worth €102m, ranking 143rd on the list.
Vegetables
In 151st place is the fruit and vegetable growers the Keeling family, worth €98m.
The Hutchinson brothers, who sit on the board of Tayto, came in 164th place, worth €91m.
New to the list are brothers Vincent and Justin Carton. Worth €63m, the brothers sold an 85% stake in the chicken company Manor Farm last year and came in at 248th place.
The owners of agricultural supplies business Quinns of Baltinglass, Liam and Kathleen Quinn, were ranked 272nd, worth €57m.
The owners of another vegetable company, Derek and Harry Geddis, came in 278th position. They set up Avondale in the 1960s, selling vegetables from their farm.
People
Former chief executive of Aryzta Owen Killian was in at 284 and is worth €54m. He still owns a €16m stake in the bakery company.
And finally, the well-known potato grower who developed Tayto park in Meath, Ray Coyle, came in at 289th position and is worth €52m.
