This week, we profile just some of the farmers devastated by flooding in the northwest last week. There is no doubt that the way communities reacted and supported each other prevented any loss of life. While this same community spirit will be important in helping to overcome the devastation of the flooding, so will Government support.

Despite the flurry of political activity after the flooding, there has been no solid commitment from Government as to what steps will be taken to help farmers who have incurred heavy losses – whether it be crops destroyed, livestock lost or fodder washed away. Farmers on both sides of the border need clarity on how they can access supports to get their businesses up and running. We presume that applications to the EU solidarity fund have been made and that the Commission will see the need for a swift response.
