One of the main discussion points at this week’s Irish Grassland Dairy tour was leasing land to aid dairy expansion. The advice from the outset was solid in that farmers should focus on maximising the efficiency of their existing holding before leasing more land – either to grow the existing business or take on a second unit.
Nevertheless, Jamie and Lorraine Kealy, who lease their full milking platform, are a great example of how long-term leasing can provide a young family with a great opportunity to grow their business. Jamie highlighted the importance of having a good, open and trusting relationship with the lessor as key to his success.
