DEAR SIR: In the letters page of 7 September I saw an item “Cattle are not all to blame”. In it, David Thompson B ArgSc MA states, “Methane and Nitrous oxide are not greenhouse gases”. This gas, methane, is probably the most damaging of all. When it comes to global warming, methane is 20 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. Methane is often trapped inside the earth and it is released by mining/deforesting. It can also be released by animals such as cows because of flatulence.
I respectfully ask David to substantiate this misleading claim with evidence.
