There are several vital scheme deadline dates falling due in the next few months, starting with the nitrates derogation on 8 April. The EU Commission is giving an allowance to extend the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) by a month, but it is up to each member state to avail of this option.
Ireland has not taken up this option, so it is important for farmers to make arrangements to complete applications in a timely manner. The BPS, Areas of Natural Constraint, transfer of entitlements and young farmers schemes must be applied for by 15 May.
The majority of offices dealing with these applications have shut to the public and are completing applications over the phone. Some Teagasc advisory offices are open for pre-arranged appointments which are deemed as essential. They have installed a clear Perspex divider and two computer screens for both parties to see the application in process.
One issue that is cropping up is where there are changes to maps. A platform being utilised by some to convey these changes to advisers and consultants is marking the changes out on maps and sending a photo by email or with your mobile phone. WhatsApp is another facility being used regularly to share information on map changes.
