Atkins Machinery held a Pöttinger working demonstration day in Offaly last week, showcasing the latest tillage equipment from the Austrian manufacturer, all of which was worked using an impressive lineup of Fendt tractors.

Diarmuid Claridge from Pöttinger Ireland said: “Despite the outlook being a little bit foggy with all that’s going on outside of Ireland, the mood among tillage farmers at the event was pretty decent. Skilled labour is a big challenge in the industry.

“Farmers realise that to stay with the times they have to invest in larger machines to get through the same workload with less help.

“TAMS is helping drive this investment. The current trend is more and more farmers going down the road of four- and five-metre machines, while technology is now playing more and more of a role on tillage farms.”

Front hopper seed drill combo

According to Pöttinger reps, the front hopper and seed drill combination has been gaining traction in Ireland since its launch less than two years ago. The move towards this system for drills with wider working widths has been to reduce loading on the tractor’s rear axle, meaning farmers can operate wider drills with smaller tractors. There are currently 12 units in Ireland.

There are currently 12 Pöttinger front hopper and seed drill combination units working in Ireland.

This Aerosem pneumatic combination is available in working widths of 4m, 5m and 6m in folding versions with the front hopper. The new front hopper is available with either a 1,700l or the larger 2,300l version.

The system features Pöttinger’s latest metering system, called Single Shoot. It allows the operator to apply both seed and fertiliser into the seed slot in one pass. The proven DualDisc double disc coulters are offset at 30cm, while they feature a 12.5cm row spacing. The coulter pressure can be adjusted mechanically (hydraulic adjustment as an option) from a central point and seed placement depth is set from the side of the machine.

The Servo 45 M mounted reversible plough is available in four-, five- and six-furrow models.

Seed distribution is controlled using the distributor head, which can be provided with individually controllable outlets (IDS) as an option. Pricing for the 5m combination starts at €120,000 RRP plus VAT.

Plough

Atkins demonstrated the recently introduced mounted Servo 45M plough series, which sits in between the smaller Servo 35S and the larger 45S. This plough has been developed for the 140hp to 240hp class. The mounted reversible plough is available in four-, five- and six-furrow models. The ploughs are all offered in ‘Plus’ variations which include hydraulic furrow width adjustment.

The four- and five-furrow models are offered as Nova and Nova Plus versions. The Nova models have hydraulic overload protection of the trip legs and a triggering pressure of 1,900kg. The series is available with an inter-body spacing of 95cm or 102cm and an under-beam clearance of either 80cm or 90cm as an option. The plough uses a simple alignment cylinder to make the plough narrow to ensure it clears the ground when turning over.

The Aerosem 3002 ADD is a 3m heavy duty (10-rotor) power harrow which is piggybacked by a pneumatic drill.

The 46W body means it is suitable for tractors with 710 tyres. The plough has a higher headstock with fourfold adjustable through axles and four top-link positions. In Ireland, 70% are sold with the 46W wide tyre board, while 30% are sold on slats. It’s priced at €52,000 RRP plus VAT.

Aerosem 3m one pass

Pöttinger explained that despite many looking for wider working widths, its 3m Aerosem one pass remains its most popular seller in Ireland.

The Aerosem 3002 ADD is a 3m heavy duty (10-rotor) power harrow which is piggybacked by a pneumatic drill. This one-pass drill can also come configured as a precision planter with single seed placement capabilities.

The seed drill is designed for four applications: sowing cereals, sowing maize with or without fertiliser and sowing maize with grass. Pöttinger has been offering the configuration since 2016, and sold its first precision planting version in Ireland last year.

This 3m machine is equipped with three rows of legs.

The machine comes with a 1,250l tank as standard while an additional 600l extension brings its capacity to 1,850l. This is a grain-only unit and is priced at €63,000 RRP plus VAT.

Synkro stubble cultivator

Atkins also demonstrated the 3m Synkro 3030 Nova stubble cultivator. A primary cultivator, the machine was doing very nice work on stubble ground and is one machine which would help some tillage farmers, on certain types of ground, transition away from the plough. This 3m machine is equipped with three rows of legs. It features 11 tines with 75cm row spacing, which are followed by six optional levelling discs.

The Terradisc 3001 comprises 24 580mm discs across two rows.

Nova models, such as the machine featured, are equipped with an overload protection system in the form of a horizontal spring unit. Pöttinger says a trigger of 550kg forces the leg to raise, avoiding pulling stones up. When equipped with the 550mm pack ring roller (500kg), the machine weighs in at 1,950kg. The unit is priced from €23,000 RRP plus VAT.

Terradisc 3001 disc harrow and air seeder

Also working on the day was the 3m mounted Terradisc 3001 disc harrow fitted with the Tegosem 200 pneumatic seeding unit, the ideal duo for catch crop sowing in a single pass. The Terradisc 3001 comprises 24 580mm discs across two rows. Each of the discs feature a sealed bearing and are mounted in an angular configuration for improved cutting and mixing of the soil. The model demonstrating was equipped with a rear packer ring roller, although Pöttinger offers a total of 11 rear harrow and roller options for final consolidation. The 3001 and packer ring roller weighs 2,065kg excluding the Tegosem 200 seeding unit which weighs an additional 125kg. The 3m disc comes with a RRP of €23,000 plus VAT, while the air seeder kit (scattering rail, steps and loading platform) comes in at €9,000 plus VAT.

The larger 5m trailed Terradisc 5001 T encompasses all the main features and options of its smaller sibling just in a wider working width and dedicated transport chassis.

The larger 5m trailed Terradisc 5001 T was also proving its worth at the event. It encompasses all the main features and options of its smaller sibling just in a wider working width and dedicated transport chassis. The 5001 comprises a total of 40 discs. A number of draw bar options are available aside from the standard three-point linkage headstock.

Well-known machinery dealer Atkins, put on a fine show of the latest Fendt tractors and Pottinger cultivation and seeding equipment at a working day last week.

These include a telescopic draw bar option or a ring hitch. The chassis is seated on 500/45 R17 tyres as standard and can be configured with air or hydraulic brakes. At the headlands, trailed models are raised on to the rear roller for weight distribution. The Terradisc 5001 T weighs in at 5,320kg and has a RRP of €57,000 plus VAT.
