There was good activity at Balla mart again today with prices slightly up on last week and reasonably steady compared to recent weeks. The best trade again was for forward store and beef bullocks and heifers. Demand for plainer types was not as strong as for better quality continental cattle.
Bullocks over 600kg sold mainly from €650 to €850 along with the weight. Lighter types from 500kg to 600kg were a strong and steady trade and ranged mainly from €700 to €850 over.
Bullocks from 400kg to 500kg were steady also and made from €600 to €700 along with the weight.

Heifers were a solid trade on the day, average prices were slightly behind the equivalent bullock, but better quality types with breeding potential were a very good trade.
Forward heifers over 500kg sold mainly from €650 to €850 over the weight, with the U grades making from €750 to €850 over the weight. Lighter stores from 400kg to 500kg sold mainly from €600 to €800 over.
Cull cows are said to be a firm trade with plenty of buyers still active at the ringside. Continental cull cows made from €1.75/kg to €1.95/kg with some younger types making over €2.00/kg. Plainer and thin older cows made from €1.50/kg to €1.70/kg with quality a major issue determining price.
