A large entry of 1,400 came under the hammer this week at Ulster Farmers Mart, Enniskillen. The quality of cattle on offer was extremely good, showing the effects of a good grazing year behind them. As a result, the sale was very strong, with some exceptional prices paid.
In the bullock ring, the trade hit a peak price of £1,375 for a 530kg Charolais animal. Forward stores weighing 500kg to 530kg sold from a general price range of £1,060 up to £1,155.
Lighter bullocks weighing from 402kg to 462kg were a solid trade, selling from £960 to £1,105 per head. Good-quality continental animals were commanding the strongest prices.
In the heifer ring, fleshed heifers sold to a top price of £1,230, back to £1,115 for animals weighing 570kg to 640kg. Good-quality store heifers weighing 430kg to 490kg sold from £875 to £1,075.
In the weanling ring, steers and bull calves sold from £600 to £865 for cattle weighing 230kg to 340kg. Weanling heifers sold from £500 to £930 for animals weighing 200kg to 392kg.
Suckler cows sold from £1,500 for a Simmental heifer with a heifer calf at foot, back to £1,310 for a Limousin cross cow with a bull calf at foot. Other notable prices were £1,450 for a Limousin cow with bull calf at foot and £1,500 for a Charolais cow with heifer calf at foot.
