The Corlismore Hereford Herd of Sean McKiernan, Corlismore, Co Cavan claimed both the overall male and overall female championship titles at the National Hereford calf show which took place at the GVM Arena in Tullamore on Saturday. Corlismorepoll 1 Sydney 793, a January 2015-born heifer calf, sired by Solpoll 1 Cruiser, emerged victorious in the female section winning the supreme female calf championship, under judge William Livesey from Leicestershire, UK.
Her herdmate, Corlismorepoll 1 lad 794, also born in January 2015 and sired by Solpoll 1 Cruiser, took the top championship in the male section to cap a phenomenal day out for the McKiernan family.
It was also a double triumph for Kilsunny Herefords, owned by Trevor Dudley & Family, Dovea, Thurles, Co Tipperary, as they claimed the reserve championship titles in both the male and female sections.
Standing reserve female champion was the 13-month old winner of the senior heifer calf class, Kilsunny Lass Lily. Lily is sired by Glaslough Judge and is a daughter of three time 1st prize winner at the National Hereford show, Kilsunny Lass Gem.
The Dudley Family also won the reserve male calf championship with a January 2015-born bull calf, Kilsunny Llyeton. This bull was also sired by Glaslough Judge and is out of a homebred dam.
Tony Hartnett, Rock Chapel, Co. Cork won the senior bull calf championship with River Rock Tyson, a November 2014-born bull calf, sired by Trillick Best. Michael Molloy, Belmont, Co Offaly won two 1st prizes in the male section, first with the senior bull Moyclare Nevis, a son of Ardlahan Malcolm and another 1st prize win in the junior bull calf section with the young March 2015-born calf, Moyclare Odin.
Other 1st prize winners in the female section included Philip Smyth, Navan, Co Meath, who took the reserve senior heifer calf championship with his heifer Ardmulchan Clover 656. John Canty, Kildalkey, Co Meath, won 1st prize in the junior heifer calf class with Portanob Erica, sired by Balleen Revival.
The commercial class open to cross bred calves sired by a Hereford bull was won by Ivan Jones, Keenagh, Co Longford, with an April 2015-born bullock.
