With 75% of resumes being rejected before they ever reach the hiring manager, Dan Potts, CEO of The Career Coach, advises people to be clear with their CV.
The Career Coach is a platform which started in 2021, now working across the country to support those navigating the employment market, hoping to bring people closer to their dream career.
Some of the programmes they run are a four-week challenge, making it more affordable and accessible to access careers support in group settings.
Along with that, they also run one-to-one support and a job seeker programme.
“On average, our clients secure a job within 30 days of working with us, from those recently graduated to those changing careers or who have spent 10 years looking for a role,” says Dan.
From speaking to employers across the country, Dan is seeing a lot of applicants not having the correct type of CV, with some even leaving out their contact information.
“The latest statistic is that you have 4.8 seconds to grab someone’s attention. It’s not about having the flashiest CV; it hasn’t been for a couple of years, although people still lean towards more design focus.
“It’s really just about being very clear and honest about who you are, what you do, and how you add value. If you can get those three things really clear in your CV, it immediately changes the game for you, because they’ll continue to read,” says Dan.
If applicants can get that across, they will start to see a change in terms of being offered interviews, according to Dan.
In terms of positions, Dan says: “The biggest rise in role requirements across Ireland, the UK, America and beyond, is heads of AI and AI specialists. They’re the most important roles that are coming up at the moment. But there are huge amounts of opportunities elsewhere as well.
“We are seeing an upswing in the market. We’re still seeing growth across construction, logistics, life sciences and technology, albeit more so on the sales side,” explains Dan.
He also sees a lot of opportunities for workers in electrical engineering, renewable energy, green skills and trade.
“There has been a huge growth in trade, as it is becoming increasingly difficult to get skilled people. I have seen a 30% salary increase for plumbers in particular over the last 12 months, which is massive,” he explains.
In terms of getting a career coach, Dan says.
“It not only helps to identify where you are going in terms of your career, but it can also make people 30% more productive and progressive in the same timeframe by having more clarity on their career direction.”
